Selectors moved into the Somerville area in the late 1850s, establishing orchards and tree nurseries. The first school and church opened in 1864, followed by a railway station on the Frankston-Stony Point line in 1889. The district remained one of Victoria's major producers of apples and pears until the 1980s. Recent local government city planning schemes earmark Somerville as a site for increased residential and commercial development.
