Spotswood

(3015, 7 km W, Hobsons Bay City)

An industrial inner-western suburb, Spotswood is bounded on the east by the Yarra River. Early industries included ammunition and canning works, and the suburb now features Australian Consolidated Industries and a number of petroleum and chemical manufacturing plants. The 1890s Spotswood Pumping Station was the engine house of Melbourne's sewerage system and is now the site of Science-works Museum. Residential areas in the suburb's west are now popular for their proximity to Central Melbourne. The suburb took its name from the local Spottiswoode family.
