This south-eastern municipality was created in 1994 by amalgamating the former cities of Malvern and Prahran. The mansion Stonnington, located within the city, was built in 1890 by mining magnate and coach-maker Robert Wagner. From 1901 to 1927 it served as the official residence of the Victorian governor. It has also been a private girls' school, hospital and teachers' college, and is now a campus of Deakin University.
