Tarneit

(3029, 23 km W, Wyndham City)

A predominantly agricultural district on the Werribee Plain north of Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and the neighbouring Truganina derived their names from Aboriginal words applied to parishes surveyed in 1839-40. Initially pastoral stations dominated the district, but later in the 19th century haymaking for the Melbourne markets became a major local land use. Significant residential expansion occurred from the late 20th century in southern areas around Sayers Road.
