Located on Rutherford Inlet on Westernport Bay, Warneet is characterised by the mangrove swamps of the Warneet Nature Reserve. Nearby Quail Island Nature Conservation Reserve, home to many water birds, features saltmarsh, mangroves, and intertidal mudflats of State significance and mudflats of national significance. Known in the 1920s as Crouch's Beach after Leslie Crouch who had blazed a trail through bush and built a holiday home there, it was renamed using the Aboriginal word for river in the following decade. Warneet is a centre for recreational fishing and yachting.
