The women’s arm of the Federation of Italian Emigrant Workers and their Families – the FILEF Woman’s Group – was active in several Melbourne campaigns and demonstrations for workers’ rights. In 1976 FILEF Women’s Group began to campaign for work-related child care. They organised lunchtime meetings in factories to assess the level of need, lobbied unions for support and obtained government funding. After years of work, the Anne Sgro Children’s Centre opened in the industrial suburb of Coburg in 1984.
