Civic Treasures

Melbourne was founded in 1835 and incorporated as a town in the Colony of New South Wales in 1842. The City of Melbourne, Public Record Office Victoria, the University of Melbourne Archives and the Ian Potter Museum of Art have an extensive collection of archival, visual and material records and objects related to the early history the City of Melbourne, together comprising a substantial corpus of material on the early town which is unique in international terms. Civic treasures and foundational documents drawn from the first decade of Melbourne's history just prior to the goldrush have been curated on this website and integrated into the eMelbourne database as a project supported by the University of Melbourne's Cultural & Community Relations Advisory Group.
