Coop's Shot Tower

Erected in 1889-90, Coop's Shot Tower and its flanking building are a rare industrial remnant in Central Melbourne. Molten lead was dropped from the top of the 50-metre tower, forming spherical shot by the time it hit the water below. A city landmark, the complex ceased production in 1960 and was eventually incorporated under a glass cone into the Melbourne Central shopping complex in the 1990s. A taller 160-metre tower in Alexandra Parade, Clifton Hill (1882), was also managed by the Coop family.
