National Mutual Plaza, Collins Street
(Melway ref. 1A F8)
Michael Meszaros studied architecture at the University of Melbourne before working with his father, Andor, as a sculptor. Like his father, he is known for his commemorative medals. His statue of Fawkner depicts a man close to the earth - a planter of crops and a builder. Next to Fawkner is John Batman, a co-founder of Melbourne. Unlike Batman, however, Fawkner lived long enough to exert an influence on Melbourne's early development.
Meszaros' statue was unveiled in 1979. In 1993, National Mutual purchased the land on which the statue is sited, and its ownership was transferred.
